Key Takeaways

  • Original Medicare covers hospital and medical services. But it only pays 80% of the bill, leaving you to pay the remaining 20%.
  • Medicare Supplement Plans in Nebraska can cover your out-of-pocket costs and fill in the “gaps” in coverage.
  • There are 12 Medicare Supplement Plans available in Nebraska.
  • If you are currently enrolled in Original MedicareOriginal Medicare is a fee-for-service health insurance program available to Americans aged 65 and older and some individuals with disabilities. Original Medicare is provided by the federal government and is made up of two parts: Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). , you’re eligible for a Medigap plan.

Medicare in Nebraska offers a number of healthcare benefits. This can include hospital care (Medicare Part A) and medical care (Medicare Part B). Original Medicare Part B also covers preventative services, screenings and vaccines.

But Medicare Part A and Part B don’t fully cover all services. Whenever you access care, Medicare covers 80% of the cost. Then you pay the remaining 20%. Other Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs include:

  • Part A and Part B monthly premiums
  • Part A and Part B yearly deductibles
  • Coinsurance and copayments each time you access care
  • Part B excess charges
Original Medicare doesn’t have a cap on out-of-pocket spending, so you’ll keep paying these costs during the whole year.

Medicare Supplement Plan Eligibility & Enrollment in Nebraska

You’re eligible for Medigap plans in Nebraska if:

Younger adults enrolled in Original Medicare can also enroll in a Medigap plan. But not all plans are offered to adults under 65. You may have limited options when selecting a Medigap plan. When you turn 65 you can explore your new Medigap options, and choose to enroll in a new plan that gives you the coverage you want.

The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This starts on the first day your Medicare Part B coverage begins. During the six-month Open Enrollment Period, you can purchase any Medigap plan in Nebraska. Insurance companies cannot use medical underwriting to deny coverage. After this period you can still buy a Medigap plan, or switch to a new plan after this period, but insurance companies can deny your application or charge you higher premiums.

Are there Nebraska Medicare Supplement Plans with Prescription Drug Coverage?

Medicare Supplement plans in NE help cover Original Medicare costs. Medicare pays first and Medigap pays second. This helps cover your share of the bill. Medigap plans do not cover prescription medications.

For prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in Medicare Part D to work alongside Original Medicare. However, your Medigap plan does not cover any Part D costs. You will still need to pay all Part D costs, including premiums, deductibles and copayments.

Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage in Nebraska

If you want more comprehensive healthcare coverage, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan in Nebraska. These plans offer all the same coverage as Original Medicare and Medicare Part D. Medicare Advantage plans can also include additional benefits like dental, vision and hearing coverage. You can access all these benefits in one plan with one monthly premium.

Medigap plans do not provide any additional coverage options. These plans help you fill in the gaps in Original Medicare coverage to lower your healthcare bill. You will keep your Original Medicare coverage, and use your Medigap coverage to supplement the costs. Medigap plans cannot be combined with Medicare Advantage plans or help cover any Medicare Advantage costs.

FAQs

When you enroll in a Medigap plan during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, you have guaranteed issue rights. This means that insurance companies must sell you a Medigap policy. You’re guaranteed to get the plan you want. During your six-month Open Enrollment Period, insurance companies can’t use medical underwriting to raise your premiums or deny coverage based on your health status. After the Open Enrollment Period, you won’t have guaranteed issue rights and your application may be denied.
As of January 1, 2020, Medigap plans can no longer cover Medicare Part B deductibles. So Medigap Plan C and Plan F are being phased out. If you already have a Medigap Plan C or Plan F, you can keep your plan and your coverage. If you became eligible for Medicare before 2020, you may be able to buy one of these plans. But if you became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020, you can’t buy a Medigap Plan C or Plan F.
