What You Should Know About Dental Insurance
Your major medical insurance probably only covers dental issues in an emergency. It’s important to make sure you and your family are fully protected with the right dental insurance plan. Without dental coverage, you’ll pay out-of-pocket for cleanings, routine checkups, tooth extractions, fillings, and all other dental procedures.
The last thing you want to happen is something small turning into a major dental issue. When you have full dental coverage, you won’t hesitate to go to the dentist when something, small, such as a cavity or a toothache comes up.
Dental insurance will help by covering your basic dental needs and preventative care. You’ll be able to select from several different plans including coverage for routine dental care, x-rays, fillings, cleanings, and more.
Most dental insurance plans will even cover around 50% of the costs associated with a serious dental injury or a major procedure.
Types of Dental Insurance Coverage to Consider
With dental insurance, you have several options, and each plan is a bit different. The types of plans to choose from include:
Choosing the right dental insurance plan for your family matters. Make sure you take the time to compare multiple options and get the coverage right for your situation.
HMO
This is a prepaid type of plan with on deductible or maximum. Instead, you pay a co-payment for some procedures, while others come with no out-of-pocket expense.
Discount Plans
Typically, a discount dental plan will provide a reduced fee-for-service option and require you to pay out-of-pocket, minus the discount.
DPPO
The lowest out-of-pocket costs with this plan will come from an in-network dentist, but you are not required to visit an in-network dentist. You will pay a co-payment, and you will need to reach a deductible. This type of plan also has a maximum.
Fee-For-Service
Also known as an indemnity plan, this type of play comes with a co-payment and a fee for procedures.
Supplemental insurance you should also consider:
Indemnity Insurance
Additional coverage for specific injuries or illnesses.
Critical Illness Insurance
Ease the financial strain for various serious illnesses.
Vision Insurance
Covers your basic vision needs like checkups, contacts, etc.
Accident Insurance
Ease out-of-pocket & medical costs from an injury due to an accident.
