Reporting a Change of Address to Medicare

Key Takeaways

  • The Social Security Administration (SSA) holds the key to keeping your Medicare mailing address current.
  • The SSA is responsible for the Medicare mailing address you have on file because SSA oversees Medicare enrollment.
  • You can change your address by calling SSA’s toll-free national number, connecting with your local SSA office or visiting SSA.gov.
  • Changing your Medicare mailing address with SSA also updates your Social Security address.

Moving can be both exciting and overwhelming. In addition to the task of carefully moving heavy furniture, heavy lifting of a different kind is required when it comes to making sure everyone in your life gets your change of address.

That includes making sure Medicare knows your new address.

Fortunately, you have multiple options when it comes time for a Medicare change of address.

How Do I Change My Address with Medicare and Social Security?

While there’s no such thing as a Medicare change of address form, you have multiple options at your fingertips.

But there’s one important thing to remember: When you change your address for Medicare purposes, you actually do so through the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Why? Because the Social Security Administration is in charge of enrollment for the federal Medicare program, a process that includes your mailing address.

You have three options for changing your address on file with SSA. Two of your options don’t require further explanation because an SSA representative will guide you through the process:

  • Call the SSA national hotline to speak with someone who can take care of the address change for you. While some automated services can be handled 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), you’ll need to connect with a live representative Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • You can visit your local SSA office (if they allow in-person visits) or reach out to your local office by phone for assistance.
The third option is entirely on your schedule: A Medicare change of address online.

Medicare change of address online

You can change your Medicare mailing address on your own time by logging into or creating a “my Social Security” account on the SSA website.

Once you access your “my Social Security” account, you can change your Medicare address by selecting My Profile, then selecting Update Contact Information. You even have the option to schedule when you want your address change to take effect.

Reporting a change of address by mail

How do I change my mailing address with Medicare? Ironically, not via the mail.

At this time, no option exists for reporting your change of address by mail. The good news is that the options available don’t require a postage stamp.

Does Changing Social Security Address Change Medicare Address?

An address change for Social Security and Medicare are the same thing.

Your Social Security mailing address and your Medicare mailing address will be the same at all times through your SSA account.

Just make sure it’s the correct address.
