Video: What Do Medicare Advantage Plans Cover?

Transcript:

Original Medicare is the public health insurance program for U.S. adults who are over 65 or have certain disabilities. If you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, you can choose to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan offered by a private insurance carrier. But what does that mean for your coverage?

While Original Medicare is the same no matter where you live in the U.S., there’s a variety of Medicare Advantage plans, and plan availability depends on your ZIP code.

Every Medicare Advantage plan must offer, at minimum, the same coverage provided by Original Medicare. After your costs meet the plan’s deductible, your insurance will help pay for a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. A Medicare Advantage plan deductible can be lower than on Original Medicare.

Most healthcare providers and pharmacies across the country accept Original Medicare. However, to get the most out of your Medicare Advantage coverage, you will need to visit only the doctors and pharmacies that are in your plan’s provider network.

For certain services under a Medicare Advantage plan, you might need prior authorization. That means your healthcare provider has to request approval from your insurance carrier.

Medicare Advantage plans can provide additional benefits.

For example, on Original Medicare, you need a Medicare Part D plan from a private insurance carrier to cover most prescription medications. Medicare Advantage plans may include Part D prescription drug coverage and other benefits not offered by Original Medicare.

At GoHealth, our licensed insurance agents help navigate your Medicare options to find the right balance of coverage, benefits, and costs. Get in touch to learn more about Medicare Advantage plans.
