Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Delaware
Key Takeaways
- Original Medicare doesn’t cover all your healthcare costs. For most covered services, Medicare pays 80% and you pay the remaining 20%.
- Medicare Supplement Plans, also called Medigap, can fill in these “gaps” in coverage.
- There are 10 Medigap plans in Delaware, each with different coverage options.
- To purchase a Medigap plan, you must be enrolled in Original Medicare. Medigap doesn’t work with Medicare Advantage plans.
How Much Does Original Medicare Cost?
Original Medicare covers hospital care (Medicare Part A) and medical care (Medicare Part B) for qualifying adults. But Medicare in Delaware does not cover all your costs. When you access healthcare, Medicare pays for 80% of the covered services, and you pay the remaining 20%. Along with this coinsurance, you will also need to pay your yearly deductible and a monthly Medicare premium.
Gaps in Medicare
As part of your Original Medicare, you have several out-of-pocket costs. In 2025, these include:
- Part A monthly premium: If you don’t qualify for premium-free Part A, you will pay $285 to $518 per month for Part A benefits.
- Part A yearly deductible: You’ll need to pay $1,676 before your coverage begins.
- Part B premium: This monthly premium starts at $185 per month.
- Part B yearly deductible: The Part B deductible is $257.
- Coinsurance : After you meet your yearly deductible, Original Medicare will pay 80% of covered services, and you’ll pay the rest.

Find My Ideal PlanDelaware Medicare Supplement Plan Coverage
You can lower your out-of-pocket costs by purchasing a Delaware Medicare Supplement Plan. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and they may cover deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. Some Medigap plans will also cover benefits not included in Original Medicare, such as emergency medical care during foreign travel.
There are 10 Medigap plans available in Delaware, including Medigap Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, Plan F, Plan G, Plan K, Plan L, Plan M, and Plan N, plus high deductible versions of Plan F and Plan G.
All Medigap plans offer three key benefits, including:

- First three pints of blood for medical procedures
- Part A coinsurance for nursing facility care
- Part B coinsurance
- Part B deductible
- Foreign travel medical emergency
What Medigap Doesn’t Cover
Medigap plans only help you cover Original Medicare costs. Medicare Supplement Plans do not cover dental and vision coverage, long-term care or prescription medications. They do not cover other out-of-pocket costs from Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Part D plans, Medicaid plans or employer health insurance plans.
DE Medigap Plan Costs
Since they are offered by private insurance companies, costs of Medigap plans can vary extensively between providers. When comparing costs, find out which type of pricing is used:
- Community-rated: Everyone with this Medigap plan pays the same premium. Your monthly premiums may go up over time, but it’s not based on your age.
- Issue-age-rated: Your premium is based on your age when you first purchased the plan. Your premiums will be cheaper if you bought the plan when you were younger, and your premiums don’t go up based on your age.
- Attained-age rated: These Medigap plans calculate premiums based on your current age. Your premiums will go up as you get older. They may be less expensive when you first enroll, but premiums will increase every year as you age.

Find The Right PlanMedicare Supplement Plan Eligibility & Enrollment in Delaware
To purchase Medicare Supplement Plans in Delaware, you must have both Medicare Part A and Part B. After you enroll in Original Medicare, you’re eligible for a Medigap plan.
The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan in Delaware is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. You’ll have six months to choose your Medigap plan, starting from the date your Medicare Part B coverage starts. If you enroll during this period, the Medigap plan provider can’t use medical underwriting to deny you coverage or charge you more for coverage.
After your open enrollment period ends, there’s no guarantee that an insurance company will sell you a Medigap plan. They may reject your application or increase the cost of coverage.
Are There Delaware Medicare Supplement Plans With Prescription Drug Coverage?
In the past, some Medigap plans included prescription drug coverage, but any Medigap plans sold after January 1, 2006 do not.
If you want prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan that includes medication coverage. However, your Medigap plan will not cover any out-of-pocket costs for the Part D plan.
Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage in Delaware
Medigap plans and Medicare Advantage plans are both offered by private health insurance companies. But the similarities end there.
A Medigap plan will help you fill in any gaps in Original Medicare coverage. This plan can cover copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.
A Medicare Advantage plan is an alternative to Original Medicare. It must include all the same benefits as Original Medicare, and may also include additional benefits like dental, vision or hearing services. Medigap plans do not work with Medicare Advantage plans and you cannot use both plans at the same time.
